Floor: Sometimes referred to as tower speakers, these are great for larger rooms or stereo music as their enclosure is optimized to provide the best performance.
Bookshelf: These are smaller models that are great alternatives to floor speakers. These take up less space and can fit on a shelf or a floor stand. Most bookshelf speakers only have a tweeter and a woofer, but because of the small size they cannot produce low bass frequency. A consumer will choose to add a powered subwoofer for deep bass.
Sound Bar: These full-sound speakers are made to compliment your flat screen TV. These are great for home theater rooms with little space, avoiding wiring and maintaining the current décor. Some models come with built-in amplification and others will come packaged with a subwoofer for complete sound. You can mount these on the bottom or side of your TV or position them on a stand.
Center Channel: Center speaker is potentially the most important speaker in your home theater speaker system. The primary purpose of a center channel speaker is to produce movie or music video sound such as dialog, singing, sound effects of all types.
In-Wall: These speakers are installed into the wall for a seamless and clean look. These use a frame and the wall itself as the cabinet and work and sound the same as regular speakers. The grills can be painted to match your walls exactly to match your décor. Subwoofers also come as in-wall units, and are something you might want to consider for added, deeper bass.
In-Ceiling: In ceiling speakers range in size and are circular in shape. Similar to In-Wall, these are installed overhead instead of walls. Great for surround sound where space is limited for surround sound speakers.
Outdoor: Weather-proof or weather-resistant speakers that are perfect for those who want to enjoy music out on their patio or yard without having to carry out speakers every time. Some are also decorative, making your lawn a little more fun.
Speaker Systems: Consists of a combination of speakers packaged together to create a surround sound system for your home theater room. Packages will usually consist of 5 or more speakers including a subwoofer, matched to provide premium sound.
Subwoofers: A loudspeaker component designed to reproduce very low bass frequencies. Most compact speakers cannot produce these rumbling audio effects. This speaker is a must in creating a surround sound home theater system in order to get the full effect of anything you are watching or listening to.

Powered: A speaker with a built-in internal amplifier. They can be connected directly to a mixing console or sound source, without the need for a separate amplifier.
Magnetically Shielded: A way of containing a speaker's magnetic energy inside its enclosure. This is usually achieved by placing another speaker magnet back-to-back with the existing one so that the two magnetic fields cancel each other. Shielding may also be achieved by lining the inside of the speaker cabinet with metal. Video shielding is important for home theater speakers - especially the center channel speaker - because if an unshielded speaker is placed too close to your TV, the magnetic energy can cause picture distortion and even permanently damage the TV's picture tube.
Surround Speakers: These speakers reproduce ambient effects for enveloping surround sound in a home theater setup.

The load value (in ohms) that the speakers present to the amplifier or the amount of resistance to the flow of current in a circuit. The lower the impedance, the higher the current flow, increasing the impedance will decrease the current flow. Low-impedance speakers (4 ohms or less) can cause problems with receivers or amplifiers which are not designed to deliver large amounts of current.
